During the era of British rule of Florida between 1763 and 1783, the King’s Road passed through present-day Daytona Beach. Turtle Mound, 14 miles (23 km) south of New Smyrna Beach, was the site of the town of Surruque, belonging to the Surruque people, whose territory extended south to Cape Canaveral. Motorsports on the beach became popular, and the Daytona Beach and Road Course hosted races for over 50 years, replaced in 1959 by Daytona International Speedway. It is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach metropolitan area, and is a principal city of the Fun Coast region of Florida.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 64.93 sq mi (168 km2), of which 6.25 sq mi (16 km2) (9.6%) are covered by water. In 2005, the city designated the several–mile radius around Main Street on the barrier island portion of the city as a blighted area and has targeted it for redevelopment by private developers. Daytona Beach was severely damaged during the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season, especially by Hurricane Charley. Land speed racers from Barney Oldfield to Henry Segrave to Malcolm Campbell would visit Daytona repeatedly and make the 23 mi (37 km) beach course famous. Daytona’s wide beach of smooth, compacted sand attracted automobile and motorcycle races beginning in 1902, as pioneers in the industry tested their inventions. In 1872, due to financial troubles, Day lost title to his land; nonetheless, residents decided to name the city Daytona in his honor, and incorporated the town in 1876.
Other museums located in the city include the Southeast Museum of Photography and the Halifax Historical Museum. On March 8, 1936, the first stock car race was held on the Daytona Beach Road Course, located in the present-day Town of Ponce Inlet. Daytona’s renowned full-day tuition programme runs during school holidays, introducing drivers aged 8-15 to the fundamentals of racing.
You can/should do a 10 min practice followed by the 20/40min race. A perfect send-off for Oli and a day to remember. We had a fantastic time at Daytona Go Karting in Tamworth for Oli’s “Final Lap” before he ties the knot next month! (Oh and btw the loaded fries are actually AMAZING if you want a post race fuel up) This is now going to be my regular track and I’ve been telling everyone how good it is! The karts are very well maintained, both DMAX and N35 all seem to be equal, the track itself is high speed but technical and really fun.

About 39.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. There were 31,170 households in Daytona Beach, of which 19.0% had children under the age of 18 living in them. The Volusia County Parking Garage is located at 701 Earl Street at North Atlantic Avenue (SR A1A).
